The biggest event in the Kenyan golfing calendar takes place this week at Muthaiga Golf Club as the DP World Tour makes its stop in Nairobi for the Magical Kenya Open presented by Absa.
Muthaiga, which hosted 17 Challenge Tour events, made its debut on the DP World Tour last year and will make a second straight staging from March 9-12.
That means die-hard golf fanatics and novice sports watchers will once again have the chance to watch world class golf on Kenyan soil as the sport’s top stars descend on the capital.
Last year’s winner Ashun Wu returns to defend his crown against a rich line-up that includes Robert MacIntyre who will be making his second Kenyan appearance after finishing in 17th on debut at Karen Country Club in 2019.
This year, Absa Bank has pledged KES2.7 million to sponsor nine local golfers at the event as part of its commitment to uplifting Kenyan sport.
The list of players includes all the eight Kenyan Pro golfers; Mike Kisia, Simon Ngige, Daniel Nduva, Justus Madoya, Dismas Indiza, Mutahi Kibugu, Samuel Njoroge and CJ Wangai.
The amateur sensation Njoroge Kibugu completes the line-up where each player will get an initial cash token of KES300,000.
Absa Bank is providing a further layered structure of incentives where players who qualify for the top 20 cut will receive KES500,000 each, while those who make it for the final top 10 will get KES1 million.
In addition, Absa will supply the players with branded kits and golf balls for the entire duration of the tournament.
The sponsorship will assist the golfers in meeting tournament costs such as registration, caddie fees, and the provision of necessary items such as their shirts, gloves, and golf balls.
